My friend Carolyn told me how proud she was of Berkley, CA for the recent passing of a rather unique plan to involve more residents in solar power systems for their houses. It sort of sounds like a sales pitch, "Hey city resident. Do you wish you could involve yourself in the greening of our community but worry it costs too much money? What if you could do it for no money?". But actually, that's exactly what it is. Here it is officially:

Nominations are now open for the second annual Green Awards presented by
the Charlotte Business Journal and the Charlotte Region Chapter of the
US Green Building Council. This year the bar will be raised and
competition will be more intense. And we will present fewer awards than
last year.
This year there are 11 award categories for individuals, businesses,
non-profit organizations and government entities. There are also 5
green building award categories.

addition to Central Carolina Community College's Green Building Program.
Announcing The Smart Commute Challenge
Smart Commute Challenge event (April 15th - May
30th). It is the largest Triangle Transit campaign of the year that
educates the public on alternative transportation and asks them to
pledge to use an alternative method of transportation one time during the timeline.

EDUCATION
* Expand and better coordinate the Smart Start and More-at-Four pre-kindergarten programs.
* Build a volunteer corps to tutor students in math and reading.
* Ensure that high schools across the state are equipped to offer online college-level coursework.
* Establish the "College Promise" program to guarantee free or affordable college for students who graduate from high school, stay out of trouble and perform community service. The program would expand a state scholarship program known as EARN and increase the scholarships from two years to four.
